Curriculum
ASPVA will use Core Knowledge curriculum. Core Knowledge provides a solid, coherent
foundation of language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, and the fine
arts. It includes, for example, the basic principles of constitutional government,
important events of world history, essential elements of mathematics and of oral
and written expression, widely acknowledged masterpieces of art and music, and
stories and poems passed down from generation to generation. Special
accommodations/scheduling will be provided for students who are considered
professionals and must be away from school.
Language Arts: The Core Knowledge sequence provides a guideline for suggested
literature. We use a structured combination of phonics, language mechanics,
grammar, and spelling, combined with an abundance of excellent literature and
thoughtful writing assignments.
Core Knowledge presents a balanced approach to writing, stressing both the
necessities of deliberate practice and the joy of writing well. Writing is taught using
an abundance of good examples as models, and students develop skills in style,
mechanics, and grammar. Shurley English will be used to reinforce grammar skills
through music.
History, World Civilizations, and Geography: The Core Knowledge curriculum
provides very rich content in history, geography, and world civilizations. It spans
the globe, key events, and places in both World and American History from many
perspectives.
Math: The Core Knowledge philosophy is that mastery of all mathematical operations
and concepts for a given grade level are needed for success in the following grade.
'The key of course is practice -- not mindless, repetitive practice, but thoughtful and
varied practice ...' Teachers encourage mathematical thinking in a variety of
situations and work with students to practice the same operation or types of
problems from several different angles.
Science: ASPVA will emphasize hands-on experimentation that requires students
to collect, sort, catalog, measure, dissect, count, graph, and determine which
evidence is relevant. We introduce students to the excitement and structure of
science, the scientific method, and reasoning by consistently asking questions like:
'How do we know? What is the evidence? What is the argument that interprets the
evidence? Are there alternative explanations or other ways of solving the problem
that could be better?' We will implement FOSS Science curricula.
Foreign Language: Students will receive Spanish lessons weekly.
Music, Art: Music and Art are integral components of the Core Knowledge curriculum.
In Core Knowledge, art and music content parallels the material taught in other
subjects. This means that students may be creating a rice paper painting of Mt. Fuji
and writing haiku when they are learning about feudal Japan.
Theater Arts: All students will participate in Theater Arts and will participate in
school productions either by creating the costumes, designing and building a set,
acting, singing, dancing, promoting, etc.
Dance: Using a blend of Vaganova, Bournonville, and French methods, students
will gain a balance in the flair of virtuoso technique and true expressive dancing.
There will be a strong emphasis on performance quality. In their studies
throughout the school year, they will be breaking down the methods for pirouettes,
pas de deux, allegro and acting through mime including many other facets that take
the dancer from the classroom to the stage.
Wellness Program: The curriculum is designed to provide an atmosphere that
encourages a healthy lifestyle as well as the enjoyment of physical activity. The
program emphasizes individual choices regarding nutrition, exercise, and habits of
healthy decision-making. Students will participate in wellness activities daily.
Wellness instruction includes Health, individual, team and lifetime sports. Students
will participate in a FitnessGram screening. They will also have the opportunity to
participate in a personal best screening such as the Presidential Physical Fitness
Award program.
Technology: Technology instruction is an important part of the over-all curriculum.
We will have computer stations networked throughout the school. Technology is
used to reinforce classroom learning in all subjects as well as to instruct in
computer basics.
Learning on Location: Students will be offered opportunities to participate in trips
to local, national and international art venues that connect to their current learning
objectives.
Community Service: The curriculum emphasizes personal, social and civic
responsibility. Opportunities to apply knowledge and skills in authentic,
problem-solving settings will be provided. Areas of service will be determined
collaboratively between students and teachers early in the year and integrated
into units of study.
